The Great Lakes Geographer, Vol. 8, No. 1, 2001 41 Prior to the 1990s, Union Township, located near the geographic center of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula (Figure 1), was experiencing predictable, if unspectacular growth. That began to change when several championship golf courses opened, along with the Soaring Eagle Casino. New service industries such as restaurants, hotels, and gas stations opened to accommodate visitor needs. As employment grew, so did the number of new homes, apartments, schools, and roads (Clemmer et al., 1996). New service industries bring welcome employment opportunities, particularly with the Native American population that operates the Casino. At the same time, poorly planned development, without regard to the environment, can result in soil erosion, water pollution, and the loss of prime farmland. To maintain water quality, it is important to identify soils inherently poor for development, like erosion-prone soils.
